Pancreas cancer occurs in almost 55% of the population and the reasons for the same may be different for each person. As many of the other diseases, pancreatic cancer, if found at the earliest stage is curable and requires no tension. Pancreatic cancer is of different types and the first step towards deciding the treatment protocol is concluding the type of pancreatic cancer. The types of pancreatic cancer are classified based on the types of cells from which cancer originates. This is highly important because the cells behave differently in each type of cancer and react differently to the treatment. Dr Deepak Varma is the most successful gastroenterologist in Kochi and provides the best treatment plans according to the need and situation of the patient
a) Precancerous tumours
These are the wide changes that occur in the pancreas cells and they include the rapid cell division, causing tumours. These are not cancerous tumours, but if they are not treated well, they can potentially develop into cancer. They can be fluid filled like Mucinous cystic neoplasm, serous cystic neoplasm etc. Then there occurs another set of tumours called neuroendocrine tumours that have a chance of becoming cancerous. They are mostly hormones, eg: insulin.
b) Exocrine Cancers
The most common form of pancreatic cancer, counting to the 95% of the pancreatic cancer conditions. They originate from the exocrine cells, which is the site of production of digestive enzymes. The different types of exocrine pancreatic cancers are Adenocarcinoma, Acinar Cell Carcinoma, Intraductal Papillary-Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN), Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma. The major symptoms can be jaundice and the related buildup in bilirubin. Back pain, abdominal pain, blood clots, nausea etc.
c) Endocrine Cancers
Endocrine tumours, commonly known as Islet cell tumours are less common and they affect the Islet cells. They affect the hormone-producing cells. Hence, each symptom can be different from the other in endocrine cancers. Malignant endocrine tumours can be cancerous. High incidence of stomach ulcers, abdominal pain, weight loss, gallstones are all different symptoms of endocrine cancers.
