What are Gallstones?

The main types of gallstones are:

How Is Diagnosis done?

At the initial stage; blood tests, ultrasound and CT scan are used to diagnose gallstones. Then further tests recommended by the doctor are carried out as indicated. They are:

i. Endoscopic Ultrasonography
This is a combination of ultrasound and endoscopy to examine the presence of bile duct stones.

ii. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
An endoscope is put inside the mouth and then into the small intestine, and a dye is injected to see the bile ducts. Common bile duct stones are removed through ERCP.


There are two surgeries for removing the gallbladder stones.

i. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
This is the best treatment for symptomatic gall stones. The surgeon makes a few small incisions on the belly in order to pass equipments and lighted telescope. The inside of the abdomen is viewed by the surgeon so that he can do the surgery accordingly.

ii. Open Cholecystectomy
A bigger wound in the belly is made so that gallbladder can be removed.
