The liver tumor is abnormal growth of tissues in or on the liver. It is also known as hepatic tumors. The liver is made of different types of tissues, hence several types of tumors can develop. This can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Benign liver tumors are common and they do not spread to other areas of the body. Benign liver tumors are not detected as they do not raise any serious health issues and any symptoms.
Hemangiomas is the most common type of benign liver tumor and are develop in women more than men. This tumor does not show any symptom and need not be treated until the symptom occurs. Sometimes surgery may be needed if the tumor is large in size and causes proximity to other organs.
Hepatocellular adenomas are uncommon benign liver tumors. It happens primarily in women in childbearing age because of the usage of estrogen pills and hormone pills. If the tumor doesn't shrink after stopping the intake of pills, surgical intervention is recommended.
Focal nodular hyperplasia
It is the second most common benign liver tumor. Like another benign liver tumors it does not bear any symptom, therefore, requires no treatment, surgical removal is hardly commended.
Malignant Liver Tumors
Malignant liver tumors are indicatives of liver cancer. At early stages, it does not cause any symptom and remain undetected. Malignant liver tumors can be primary or metastatic. Primary liver cancer originates in the liver itself whereas metastatic liver cancer originates in other organ and spreads to the liver.
HCC or hepatocellular carcinoma
Cirrhosis of the liver is the common cause of the HCC. Hepatitis C and alcoholism are the common causes of cirrhosis. Generally, it is discovered in early stages and treatment may include surgical removal, radiofrequency ablation, radiation an chemotherapy.
Cholangiocarcinoma is commonly known as bile duct cancer. It is relatively rare but dangerous. Surgical resection or liver transplantation is the treatment preferred for this type of cancer.
Metastatic liver tumors
Metastatic liver cancers originate from other organs elsewhere in the body and metastasized to the liver. Treatment options are limited for the metastasized cancer. It includes surgical resection, Chemotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, and embolization.
